Medlands Beach new residence .
Status: Under construction
New, off-grid home straddling the threshold between beach and rural farmland at Aotea / Great Barrier Island.
Set within a serene coastal landscape, the home is oriented to capture expansive panoramic views. Strong horizontal planes define the architecture, expressing the split-level organisation required to negotiate the steeply sloping site while reinforcing a calm, grounded presence in the landscape.
Internally, views are carefully orchestrated to respond to changes in terrain, creating a series of varied view corridors that frame the surrounding environment and enrich the experience of moving through the home.
The upper, northern portion of the house opens toward the sand dunes and the ocean beyond, while the southern end engages with a more rural outlook, taking in the rolling hills to the rear. Operating entirely off-grid, the home is self-sufficient in energy and services, reinforcing a sustainable relationship with its environment. A restrained combination of timber and powder-coated metal cladding provides a cohesive, durable external envelope well suited to the coastal setting.
